Will you be in Tucson when I come for graduation? I sure hope so. You’re making me gyoza!!
Love a hungry and Japanese-food-craving,
Jen!

I’ve been looking around and apparently the only way we can get the author’s name to show up with each post is through picking a different theme. Are we okay with this one? Any hardcore objections? The banner has a few options and can even be changed to a personal picture (if anyone has talent in that area), and the color scheme can be changed, too.
Let me know if their are objections on the new look.

I think I picked both the right profession and the right job. After two shifts on my floor, the externs were shuffled into a week-long orientation for new employees and nurses. While eight hour days of sitting and listening to “this is how UMC works” are more than a little boring and tedious, the staff was welcoming and full of pride for their hospital. When compared to the apathetic staff at the VA, these nurses are enthusiastic and thrilled to have us, students, at their hospital. It totally blew me away. Needless to say, it got me super excited to be starting my career there. It also made me realize that I am most definitely not cut out for a job that requires five days a week at a desk. I’ll take my three physically-and-emotionally-demanding twelve-hour shifts over a 9-to-5 any day. Thankfully, Friday was a shorter day, allowing Brandi, a friend from nursing school, and I to grab a few drinks at Frog ‘n’ Firkin for happy hour. (Their cider is really good, BTW.)
Yesterday, Annie (and her guest and our friend Jon Gordon) and I made the very long trek to Rio Verde- it’s way north of Scottsdale and Fountain Hills- for our friend Tom’s wedding. We met him through NAU Summer Music Camp about nine years ago and, alas, the majority of our little group has stayed in touch. My first summer there was in 1998 when I met Marisol and Amber, my neighbor in the dorm we were staying. They introduced me to their middle school friend, Danny, who ended up becoming one of my best friends. The following summer, my sister and my best friend Marissa joined us, along with others like Tom. I haven’t seen or spoken to Amber, Danny, or Tom since my freshman year here at the UA (Marisol, and unfortunately still, since she stopped going to camp sometime in high school). A few things have changed, Danny’s sexual orientation and other issues, Amber’s pregnancy, and Tom’s new marital status and news that he’s moving to London to study composing to name a few, but it was as though a single day hadn’t gone by. We may as well have been thirteen year-olds dancing to “Baby Got Back” in the NAU gym. There are few people that I’ve known for a decade that have solidified themselves so much in my life, and I feel so lucky that I got to see them again this weekend. We had SO much fun! For more pictures, check out Annie’s facebook album.

This is Danny. When we met, I was about a foot taller than him. I think we hugged for an entire minute when I saw him in the church.

This is Tom, child prodigy. He’s attractive, funny, a talented musician, and probably will be a famous composer someday. And now, he is married.

In order: me (obviously), Annie (duh), Tom the Groom, Danny, and Amber (plus her new addition). To see our stellar dance moves, see the facebook album.
Following the reception, Annie, Jon, and I made our way to Glendale to crash at our parents house while they were out camping. Alas, the screen door, to which we have no key, was locked. So I drove us home and we got back a little before 2am. Which is fun.
This week: I learn phlebotomy, or the art of drawing blood. So, next time y’all come over, I’ll probably have better luck sticking you. It’s another five-day stretch of eight-hour days. How do you people do it?!
P.S. Email me your bios and I’ll put them on your page. Have a good week, everyone!

Hooray! Now for a real blog post! I hope you all are having a fabulous time in your respective locations. Unexpectedly, I am having a really great summer so far- probably because I haven’t touched my honors thesis. I had the apartment for myself for the first week and a half while Annie went home, so I took the opportunity to get in a TON of reading and cleaning. My pantry is sparkling and I’ve finished three books (almost done with number 4). I also saw the midnight showing of Indiana Jones- anyone see it/love it yet?
On Friday, I drove home and the family drove up to Flagstaff. For you people not currently residing in Arizona, the weekend was…chilly. Meaning, it was crazy-windy down here in Tucson and pleasant up in Phoenix, while we packed up my parents new trailer. On the way up, it snowed. I’ll have pictures (hopefully) later, but by the time we got to our camp site, the front of the camper was covered in it. That night, we roasted marshmallows IN THE SNOW. It was totally awesome, especially because we have a heater in the trailer. I know, not real camping, but it was great to get out of the heat, even if it wasn’t really hot over the weekend.
Tuesday was my first day of orientation with UMC. My instructor for next semester is in charge of the externship program and I’ve heard…rumors… Let’s hope this gives me a good opportunity to get on her good side, especially because she does the hiring for UMC. Wait. I have a contract already and my manager’s trying to convince to stay in the ICU. Tee! Anyway, the day was pretty exciting as orientations go, but the next day was much better. My preceptor is a very cool person and I think we’ll get along fabulously all summer. It was a pretty slow day at first, but we switched patients to a fresh post-op heart patient (hello bypass!) and by the end of the day, I remembered what it was like to do a twelve. Except, I’m barely doing anything for now but watch my poor nurse run around.
But, today. TODAY. Today, my nurse picked the most difficult patient on the floor FOR ME, because he was going to surgery. So, not only did I get a nice big challenge in the thinking department, I got to see a Tandem Heart explanted (it’s a heart assist device that went in through his jugular, through his body, and out his groin). They didn’t open him all up, just his jugular. But, I think seeing a very impressive cardiothoracic surgeon stitching up a big fat vein is pretty fucking spectacular.
Missing you all and hoping to hear from everyone soon!
P.S. Jen, your hair looks GREAT.

…and it was good.
Take a look around WordPress to get used to the style, update your bio (or we could write one for each other a la Sinterklaas poems), and get bloggin’!
Also: are we all aware of tags and what they do? Apparently there are categories, too. Any ideas on how we want those, if at all? And, do we like the theme? We have the option of our header picture if anyone wants to come up with something.
